Checked Bags? No Thanks. French Polynesia in a Carry-On

French Polynesia in December? Sounds Dreamy! But hauling a checked bag through multiple layovers? No, thanks. I took the plunge last year for an 8-day escape to this tropical paradise—with just a carry-on.

Navigating long-haul flights with layovers is stressful enough, and a checked bag adds another layer of worry. Lost luggage? Baggage claim delays? Overweight fees? No, thank you! Traveling light gave me freedom, efficiency, and peace of mind.

Why Carry-On?

Coming from Peru, I had a layover in Bogota before reaching Los Angeles. With extra travel time, a carry-on streamlined my journey. Plus, skipping baggage claim meant I could head straight to my next destination hassle-free.

For seasoned travelers, a weekend getaway with just a carry-on is a breeze. But mastering the art of packing light for a long-haul trip to a picture-perfect destination—without sacrificing style—can feel daunting. Here’s how I did it:

Packing Smart for Paradise

The key to carry-on success is strategic planning. Here’s how I tackled it:

Plan Your Outfits by Itinerary: Before diving into your closet, map out your activities. Are there days filled with snorkeling and hiking, followed by elegant dinners? Knowing your itinerary helps you choose versatile clothing that transitions seamlessly.

Mix & Match Magic: A flowy maxi dress can go from a beach cover-up to a breezy dinner ensemble with a statement necklace. Lightweight jumpsuits, skirts, and flowy blouses are perfect for layering and re-styling.

Accessory Arsenal: Shoes, bags, and jewelry can elevate or tone down an outfit. Stick to neutral tones and versatile pieces to maximize your wardrobe.

Fabric Matters: With humid, tropical weather, lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, and quick-dry materials are must-haves. Bonus: they take up less space and resist wrinkles!

Take Photos Before You Pack: Snap pictures of each outfit combination. This eliminates the stress of outfit planning mid-trip!

Travel-Sized Essentials

Most hotels offer high-quality toiletries, saving you valuable space. For skincare and makeup, mini versions of your essentials are the way to go.

Skincare: Micellar water, cleanser, moisturizer, and a mini eye cream in travel-sized containers. A reef-safe tinted sunscreen was a game-changer—providing lightweight coverage while eliminating the need for foundation.

Makeup: A compact with transparent powder, concealer, blush, and tinted lip balm. I also packed clear lip gloss and waterproof mascara—perfect for a tropical glow.

Hair & Body: A mini hairbrush, travel-sized deodorant, and a multipurpose hydrating oil (great for skin and hair).

My Carry-On Checklist:

Clothing:
✔ 2 jumpsuits
✔ 4 maxi dresses
✔ 3 flowy blouses
✔ 1 skirt
✔ 2 swimsuits
✔ 1 sleepwear set
✔ 1 beach cover-up

Shoes:

✔ 1 pair of heels (optional)
✔ 1 pair of sneakers

Bags:

✔ 1 beach bag

Final Thoughts

Packing light isn’t about restriction—it’s about efficiency and freedom. With these travel hacks, you can explore French Polynesia stress-free, without waiting at baggage claim.

So, are you ready to master the carry-on life and make your tropical escape seamless? Bon voyage!
